SWE-CI Outreach
The goal of the Outreach Committee is to engage outreach in the Indy and surrounding areas by either planning or volunteering to attend outreach events. The Outreach Committee is responsible for volunteering and getting groups together to volunteer at local K-12 outreach events, planning the SWE-CI flagship WOW! That’s Engineering event, attending biweekly board meetings
You should join this committee if you want to make a difference in the K-12 STEM outreach community, love working with kids or coordinating STEM hands on activities, or love to volunteer.

Past Outreach Events
FY19: Rube Goldberg - April 27th 2019
This event is held in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana. This year SWE-CI had over 12 volunteers helping mentor 2nd and 3rd grade girls to construct their RUBE Goldberg machines and work toward their STEM badge.

FY19: Wow! That’s Engineering: Indianapolis - March 9th 2019
WOW! Is the flagship large event hosted by Central Indiana SWE. In collaboration with IUPUI, SWE-CI coordinates a day long event to introduce 4th-8th grade girls to the different engineering disciplines. Over 70 girls and 30 volunteers were present throughout the day. In the morning the girls went through small activity rotations to learn more about engineering disciplines. In the afternoon the girls learned about the engineering design process and went through a design challenge. During the day the girls also were able to interact with engineering mentors, listen to engaging speakers, and build teamwork skills. Parallel to the girls program, over 20 parents and educators attended a program to better understand what engineering is, resources available, and the dynamics of being a woman in STEM.

IndyRAGE - September 28-29, 2018
On Friday, September 28th and Saturday, September 29th SWE-CI volunteered at Rolls-Royce’s IndyRAGE (Raising Awareness for Girls in Engineering). Twenty five teams from five different states competed with all girls running the robots. SWE-CI helped as setup volunteers and had a booth publicizing our mission and future STEM outreach events.

FY19: Ignite your Superpower - September 10, 2018
On Monday September 10th SWE-CI volunteered at this annual event hosted by Women in High Tech to inspire middle school girls to pursue STEM. Volunteers acted as role models, helped girls with various STEM activities, and supported the overall smooth running of the day.

FY19: Circle the City - October 20, 2018
On Saturday October 20th, SWE CI collaborated with the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana in their annual Circle in the City event. In this event, over 4,500 elementary and middle school girls had the chance to explore science demos and hands on activities. Our booth focused on teaching girls the basics of electricity - specifically batteries - through a lemon clock and snap circuits. Through the afternoon, hundreds of girls visited our booth and enjoyed playing with our demos. Some parents even learned a few new things!
FY18: Girl Scouts Rube Goldberg Workshop 2018
SWE-CI with the help of volunteers assisted the brownie Girl Scouts (2nd & 3rd graders) in Rube Goldberg type contest on March 10,2018. Volunteers worked with a small group of 4-5 girls learning about being an engineer inventor through short activities and an opportunity to build and test a Rube Goldberg type machine to perform a simple task.

FY18: Engineer's Day at the Children's Museum
On February 17, 2018 CIS-IEEE hosted Engineer's Day at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, providing 250+ children and their families with the opportunity to learn about engineering through hands-on activities.
SWE-CI hosted a booth for children to try creating a battery using various fruits and veggies. We even used lemons as batteries to power clocks! The activity helped teach children about batteries and electrochemistry, as well as how to make observations and hypotheses, just like scientists and engineers!
