Professional Development
SWE-CI is looking for volunteers to join the Professional Development Committee! The goal of the PD Committee is to put together events for members that encourage them to attain high levels of educational and professional achievement, encourage and assist women engineers and allies in readying themselves for a return to active work after a period of absence, and conduct any other activities approved by the Section membership to further enhance of the professional development of its members.
The Committee is responsible for putting together professional development events by selecting event topics and speakers that assist in achieving SWE’s Society level and local level Professional Development goals.

"Tech Talk: Chlorinated Solvent Technologies and New Fluorocarbon Challenges" February 19, 2021
On February 19th, SWE hosted a virtual event to from an industry expert about the suite of remediation technologies used by environmental engineering professionals to clean up one of the most common groups of contaminants released to the environment, chlorinated solvents.
"100 Anniversary of the Women's Vote and SWE Capitol Hill Days" - October 13th 2020
On October 13th, SWE hosted a virtual event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Women's Vote, and hear from Award Winning Kate Maxwell and her experience at the SWE Congressional Outreach Days. The event started with a fun trivia game focused on Women's Rights. After trivia, Kate Maxwell spoke about her experience attending a SWE Capitol Hill Day as well as advice for how to be involved in a future Congressional Outreach Day. “Brewery Technical Tour” - June 26th 2019
On June 26th, SWE hosted a guided technical tour at SunKing Brewing Company to provide information about the engineering of the beer we know and love. Attendees enjoyed an inside look into the main brewing facility and barrel aging facility in downtown Indianapolis. The tour began in the quality lab and proceeded through the main brewing area, barrel aging and sour facility, and concluded in the tap room with cheese and charcuterie snacks by Oca. Participants received a souvenir SunKing tasting glass, sampled house and specialty Kings Reserve Selection beers, and networked with SWE and non-SWE professionals around Indianapolis. Proceeds from beer sales during this event supported Indy Pride. Thank you to everyone who attended this professional development event.
Special thanks to SunKing Brewery, Oca, and Kevin Smolar MSc (SunKing Quality Control Manager and our highly-informed tour guide) for generously supporting this event.

On April 25th, SWE-CI co-hosted the Science on Tap Gets Sustainable with SWE-CI event. The event featured an interactive Q&A sustainability discussion and introduced a unique discussion on the importance of diversity and inclusion - a D&I Spotlight.

“Leading with Influence” - a Joint Event Featuring Julie Kratz - February 6th 2019
On February 6th, Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS), Society of Women Engineers- Central Indiana (SWE-CI) Section, Women in Manufacturing (WiM), and Women & Hi Tech (W&HT) teamed up for a high powered event to learn how to Lead with Influence. This amazing professional development and networking event facilitated dialogue between members of our ally organizations and left attendees well equipped to “Lead with Influence” in their own life. Special thanks to Sun King Brewery, The Morales Group, and Julie Kratz for generously supporting this event. Thank you to Nameless Catering.

“Drones - They're Here Now! (Applications of Small Unmanned Systems)” - August 28th 2018
On August 28th, 2018, the Society of Women Engineers - Central Indiana (SWE-CI) Section and AIAA co-hosted this event. John Evan Flatt, a Flight Operation and System Integration Specialist at Purdue University, has worked for several years with autonomous UAVs and discussed the applications of these small aircraft in agriculture, remote sensing, infrastructure, and transportation. He also spoke on his work as a certified private pilot and sUAS operator, and his designs on wheel based mobile mapping systems and field phenotyping platforms. The event brought around 30 people and was held over a splendid taco bar! The audience asked many great questions and sparked lots of technical discussion about the work of UAVs and their applications for the future. Thanks to everyone who came out to the event!

FY18: "It's not just what you say, but how you say it"
On March 7, 2018 SWE-CI hosted a interactive session "It's not just what you say, but how you say it" to enhance one's awareness of how to read and respond to verbal and non-verbal cues, explain how to adjust your body language to suit the situation, and give you an opportunity to practice these skills.

Strengths Finder Professional Development Workshop
On Feb 24, SWE-CI hosted an interactive PD workshop led by JoDee Curtis, Gallup Certified Strengths coach, owner and founder of PurpleInk LLC. JoDee helped us learn about our strengths, their benefits, and the "dark side" of our strengths that can be our worst enemies. We hope you use your strengths and what you learned in the workshop to achieve your personal best. Thank you for making our Strengths Finder Workshop a success!
